Zhang Yuanxing£¬born in 1935 in the city of Shenyang£¬is one of the supreme masters of Tiny Sculptural Calligraphy£¬the first person skilled in folk minicarving in China and a famous calligrapher. He is now appointed to be the art member of the Promotion and Development Association of Chinese Arts and Culture, the honorary president of the Calligraphy Association of Hunan Province, the consultant of Institute of Oriental Folk Arts, and the member of Folklore Committee of Liaoning Province.
As a local person of Shenyang which has a long history, Zhang Yuanxing has been deeply influenced by the strong artistic atmosphere of the ancient capital. He has been genuinely fond of the calligraphy and painting since his childhood, so he has concentrated on the study of the works by the famous calligraphers of different generations, from which he also obtains great joy. At his tour of the Palace Museum at the age of 16, Zhang saw a grain-sized ivory carving of an inscription of 140-word Sun Yat-sen¡¯s will, there being 170 words in total including the signed inscription, which stirred his ambition and interest. Just because of such a small piece of ivory, Zhang started his artistic trip to the Tiny Sculptural Calligraphy as well.
After 50 years¡¯ exploration and a great deal of the artistic practice wholeheartedly, Zhang so perfectly combines the unique charm of the traditional Chinese characters with the micro-engraved skills that he becomes famous for the exquisite calligraphy and the minicarving skill in the engraved calligraphy field. Some of his works are collected by the Museum of Liaoning Province. Besides, his name has been recorded in the Dictionary of Chinese Celebrities and his works regarded as the ¡°exclusive work in China¡±, which has attracted a large number of collectors at home and abroad.
